My favorite head gear:
The head light! I fit it over my baseball cap and it lights the way. Unfortunately, we only have one so BS and I can't run together at night! I think this light was $39.00. Maybe we should buy another one...
The SUPER cute lemon yellow vest. We don't own one but I do use one when I run with Movin' Shoes...thanks for taking care of us Jim! I just love safety!
Flashing, reflective wrist or ankle wraps. TOTALLY cool but they look expensive. Great rave party wear...not that I've ever been to a rave party...
So I'm going to be a safer runner this year and NOT run with my two dogs...I once tripped over our older dog and, well, it wasn't pretty.
I'm also going to try not to run alone in the dark, dark of night(like after 7:00 p.m.). Even though our area is very safe, it isn't well-lit and you just never know.
Keep running vampires and take the time to remember why you LOVE to run at night;
1. It's cool
2. Less traffic
3. The moon is out
4. The air is still
5. It's quiet
Have fun, be safe!

7 p.m.? Sunset here in CT is around 4:40 p.m. now. I need to get something else reflective or a cool headlamp. All I have is an armband that has an annoying, yet effective, red flashing light. I hate running at night myself. I shouldn't be living in CT. I dislike cold weather and early sunsets. OK, I'm done whining. Enjoy your daylight until 7 p.m....LOL.
I love running in the dark. I am alone with my thoughts and I feel like I am hidden away from everyone else. I
I have a few of the Brooks nightlife vests. love em. They are not too expensive, either... I think they're under $20?
As Rick Ocasek of The Cars said once - "I like the nightlife baby; LET'S GO!"
Have fun!
Do all of us need to pich in a buck or two so BS can have a lamp too? That is sad. He needs one of his own don't ya think? :)
Mmm, something to think about. I did find a reflective cloth on-line at specialty outdoor fabric store, that can be purchased by the yard, I think I might make some kind of bandanna to wear.
Be safe!
I think I need to add a few of these items to my collection of running gear. Doing runs on the treadmill is going to get old fast, so running in the dark may be my only option.
Many moons ago I used to LOVE running at night or early mornings but no more. Just too unsafe nowadays with all the criminals out and about. Sometimes I was not sure whether it's safer to be seen or not to be seen.
But I did run in the darkness at my last iron tri and found that the cap light I had worked great. Can be clipped to anything, rotates 360 degs as well as up and down, and cost only ~$11.
Happy and safe running!!
Eek, 3 years of running in the dark and I don't have ANY of this stuff. Time to go shopping....
I've never mastered the headlight but I always run with a reflective vest when it's dark. A true lifesaver - thanks for reminding everyone to make sure you stand out to motorists and cyclists. It's also a very bad idea to run in bike paths at night. I can't tell you how many runners have been killed because a motorist didn't see them in the road in time and apparently the runner didn't react soon enough either. Very very sad.
I never leave home without my Petzl headlamp. Best winter running investment ever! I do want to get me one of those vests too.
p.s. 7:00. Wow that's late - it gets dark here around 4:30.
Man I wish I was still having some kind of daylight until 7. That would make running so much easier!
I haven't run in the dark in ages, but I suppose I should be prepared, just in case!
PS:
I e mailed you about the Nikes. I'm interested, just in case you haven't had any takers yet.
I'm a running vampire!! I got a new jacket illuminite for my bday next week--watch for a review of it coming soon :)
I've just been to my local running store and now have the exact same headlight (love it and used it while camping as well), bought the reflective vest and also an LED light which you can velcro around your arm or ankle .. good idea no? Not very pricy here and should be cheaper there...
Benefit of living in a big city is lots of streetlights! So no headlamp necessary for me. However, I could use some more reflective gear. I have a reflective anklet thingy ($3 at REI) but a vest would be good.
LOVE running at night!
I need my mother to read this post, she runs at night with 2 dogs and her i pod blaring in her ear!! Not safe at all!! She is an unsafe vampire runner!!
A blogger at wordpress recommended your post. I'm a moonlight runner, out of love for the solitude of night and out of necessity (I hate mornings). The witching hour has always been my favourite time to run, although it isn't very practical anymore. I always were reflective gear and flashing lights - I'm not taking any chances.
Are you signed up with REI? Go to their website and sign up for their eMail if you haven't. Every now and then they send out 20% off coupons, and then you can go snag another headlamp for Boy Scout.
And yes - we can do an archeological dig with my headlamp. Seriously though, I got it because this time of year I do a lot of miles around the Upper Back Bay and San Diego Creek trail from Mesa on over to the YMCA. A lot of that trail has no lights at all - so the more lighting I can get the better.
And I think the best part of running at night in the winter is standing there when I'm done watching the steam rising from my head. Gives me the feeling of accomplishment!
